SPSS for Windows

SPSS License Agreement

Important: If you have not already signed the end user agreement and received the SPSS/Amos Authorization Codes, you should proceed to the IT Service Desk in 025 Central Classrooms to complete that part. Please also note that Amos has a separate Authorization Code.

Download SPSS

Because of licensing restrictions, you'll be connected to a secure sever once you click on the "download" link below. You'll be required to enter your OSU Internet username and password to connect to this server. Warning: This file is very large; do not attempt to download it using a modem connection unless you're prepared to wait a number of hours for the process to complete.

Install SPSS

Note: As you're downloading the SPSS install file, the type of information that appears on your screen varies depending on the browser you're using.

  1. When the download is finished, uncompress the self-extracting setup file.

  2. Close all open windows, and then choose Run in the Start menu.

  3. Click on the Browse button in the "Run" dialog box.

  4. Locate the subdirectory where you downloaded SPSS and click on the file spss16w.exe. Click on Open and then click on OK.

  5. When prompted for an "extract to" directory, use an empty temporary directory on your hard drive.

  6. Locate the directory where you expanded your files and double click on the file Setup.exe. NOTE: Under Vista, if you have an authorization problem starting setup, right click on setup.exe and select Run as Administrator.

  7. The installation initial splash screen is displayed. Review and print the Site License Installation Instructions PDF file to learn about the method for licensing SPSS.

  8. Select Install SPSS and then follow the onscreen instructions. See below for installation of Amos, if you need this product.

  9. When asked to supply your license type, Desktop users should choose Site License. If installing in a server environment, choose Network License.

  10. When you are asked for your serial number, use the instructions on the handout from the IT Service Desk to input this information.

  11. At the end of the installation, you will be asked if you want to start the License Authorization Wizard. This is what allows you to obtain a license. You can perform this immediately or delay it. Subsequently you can start the Wizard by choosing License Authorization Wizard from the Start/Programs menu or from within the SPSS Help menu.

Note: The process of obtaining the license code could take 2-3 minutes. You can see the modules you have licensed by double-clicking on showlic.exe in the SPSS installation root directory.

Warning: SPSS is extremely sensitive to time changes on your computer. If you change your time by more than 24 hours, your copy likely will cease running.

Install Amos

Amos also is available under the SPSS campus license. It will install into a different directory than SPSS. When you click on setup.exe as above, the initial splash screen comes up; this time select Install Amos.

NOTE: under Vista, if you have an authorization problem starting setup, right click on setup.exe and select Run as Administrator.

The process closely follows the SPSS installation scenario. Choose Site License for the license type. When viewing the Amos installation instructions on the initial splash screen by selecting Installation Instructions, choose the Site License version.

You will use a separate Amos Authorization code obtained from the IT Service Desk to activate Amos at the end of the installation.
