Download MT NewsWatcher
You'll be connected to a secure sever once you click on the "download MT NewsWatcher" link below. You'll be required to enter your OSU Internet username and password to connect to this server.
Install MT NewsWatcher
Note: As you're downloading the install file, the type of information that appears on your screen varies depending on the browser you're using.
- When the install file has finished downloading
and uncompressing, you're ready to begin using the software. Copy the
MT-NewsWatcher 3.4 folder into your Applications or other folder of your
choice.
- At this point, you should check your configuration values as described in the following section of these instructions.
Configure MT NewsWatcher
There are certain values that need to be set in MT NewsWatcher configuration file so it will interface properly if you're using OIT connectivity services. You may not need to make any changes, but it's recommended that you at least check to be certain the current configuration is correct.
When you first start MT NewsWatcher, it will take you through a configuration wizard. Following are the proper settings:
- Real name: type your full name (example, Jane Doe).
- Organization: optional.
- Email address: it's recommended you use your "osu.edu" address (example, doe.999@osu.edu).
- Mail server (SMTP for outgoing mail): type smtp.service.ohio-state.edu.
- Server address: type nntp.service.ohio-state.edu.
Tip: Normally you do not need to provide authentication to the news server to access newsgroups. However, if you're connecting from off campus, you may need to do this. When asked to authorize, you must enter your username and password.
There are a variety of other options you can set based on your personal preferences. To set various options, go to the Special menu; you also can set preferences under the MT-NewsWatcher menu. For more information about options and on using the software, refer to the online MT NewsWatcher documentation (there is a link to the web site in your NewsWatcher folder). When you're finished changing options, click on OK to save your changes.
