Eudora for Windows
Download Eudora
Because of licensing restrictions, you'll be connected to a secure sever once you click on the "download Eudora" link below. You'll be required to enter your OSU Internet username and password to connect to this server.
Install Eudora
Note: As you're downloading the install file, the type of information that appears on your screen varies depending on the browser you're using.
- When the download is complete, you must unzip the Eudora
file.
- Choose Run in the Start menu.
- Click on the Browse button
in the "Run" dialog box.
- Locate the subdirectory where you downloaded the compressed
file and click on eudora7_1.exe. Click
on Open and then click on OK to
begin.
- You're asked to select a destination drive where the
unzipped files will be placed. It's recommended you choose an empty, temporary
directory.
- A series of files are now extracted. When this is done,
close all open windows and exit from any other programs you may have running.
Use the same procedure as in Steps 2-4 to locate and start the V7.1
install program (setup.exe).
- After the setup program prepares the InstallShield
Wizard to lead you through the rest of the steps, click on the Next> button
to continue.
- Read the License Agreement when it appears. If you
agree to the terms, click on Yes and then
click on the Next> button.
- The "Choose Program Folder" dialog box appears.
If you're installing for the first time, choose the default directory
or enter a directory name. If you're updating, the installer will display
your current folder. Click on Next> to
choose this, or click on the Browse button.
Locate the desired Eudora directory in the "Choose Folder" dialog
box and then click on OK. When the "Choose
Program Folder" dialog box reappears, click on the Next> button.
- The "Choose Data Folder" dialog box appears.
Choose a folder appropriate to your needs and click on the Next> button.
- The install now begins. Follow the on-screen prompts.
At the end of the installation, a window appears with two check boxes.
One check box allows you to view the Eudora "Readme" file. The
other box is labeled "Take me to the Premium Services Directory page." If
you check the Premium Services box, your browser will display a Eudora
web page with various additional programs such as QuickTime, Acrobat,
etc. which you may choose to use with Eudora. A number of these are available
over the Internet, and Acrobat also is on the Sofware Downloads pages
as a separate download.
- When this screen appears, make your selections and click on Finish.
Be aware that when you expanded the dowload file above, an additional file called "smime.exe" was included. This is a self-extracting zip file. Double-click on it to extract smime.dll and SMIME_Readme.txt. View the Readme file for a discussion on S/Mime to determine whether you want to add the smime plug-in to your Eudora installation.
Note: The Eudora 7.1 User's Guide is available separately and is not bundled with the installation.
Configure Eudora
If a configuration wizard dialog box appears the first time you start Eudora, click on the Cancel button and follow the instructions below to configure your new software. There are certain values that need to be set in Eudora's configuration file so it will interface properly if you're using OIT connectivity services. To do this, first start Eudora and then choose Options in the Tools menu. Click on the Getting Started icon.
Important - The settings below apply only to the OIT e-mail service. If you're using a different Internet Service Provider such as Road Runner, WOW, AOL, etc. or a mail server in your college or department, please substitute the correct server names for your incoming and outgoing e-mail. If you're using a non-OSU Internet Service provider, you must configure your mail server information accordingly. You cannot use the OSU SMTP server for outgoing mail. You will need to use your ISP's SMTP server. Click here for more information about the change in open mail relay.
- Real Name: type your full name (example, Jane Doe)
- Return Address: OIT recommends you use your "osu.edu" address (example, doe.999@osu.edu)
- Mail Server (Incoming): type pop.service.ohio-state.edu
- Login Name: type your username (example,
doe.999).
Important: If you use an old MAGNUS style username for authentication consisting of your first initial and up to seven characters of your last name (e.g., jdoe), you must type that username instead of your "lastname.#."
- SMTP Server (Outgoing): type smtp.service.ohio-state.edu
Click on the Sending Mail icon; following are the proper values:
- Return address: the default is the information you entered for this value under "Getting Started"
- Domain to add to unqualified addresses: optional
- All remaining options depend on your personal preferences
Finally, click on Incoming Mail. If the box next to "Delete from server after ____ days" is checked, verify that a number of days is specified. It's important you do this because the OIT mail server handles a large volume of messages every day, and there is a finite amount of storage space. It is not possible for everyone to leave all old messages on the server.
There are a variety of other options you can set based on your personal preferences. For more information about options, refer to the online Eudora help file (click on the Help menu). When you're finished changing options, click on OK to save your changes.
