Eudora for Macintosh OS X

Download Eudora

Because of licensing restrictions, you'll be connected to a secure sever once you click on the "download Eudora" link below. You'll be required to enter your OSU Internet username and password to connect to this server.

Install Eudora

Note: As you're downloading the install file, the type of information that appears on your screen varies depending on the browser you're using.

  1. After the install file has been downloaded and uncompressed, you're ready to start the setup program.

  2. First exit from your current version of Eudora. Open the folder where you downloaded the installer. Note: If the file did not automatically unstuff, double-click on the eudora6_24x.hqx icon.

  3. Open the folder called eudora6_24x and then double-click on the Eudora 6.2.4 OSX icon.

  4. When the Eudora splash screen appears, click on the Continue button.

  5. A "Read me" file will display information about minimum requirements and installing the software. When you're finished reading, click on the Continue button.

  6. Read the Software License Agreement and then click on the Agree button if you accept the license terms.

  7. A dialog box appears giving you a choice of a New install or an Update install. Make your choice depending on your circumstances. Click on the Install button to continue.

  8. A dialog box appears allowing you to select an existing folder or to create a new folder. Select the appropriate installation option. Navigate to the existing folder containing Eudora. Click on the Eudora icon and then click on Update to begin. Alternatively, click on New folder to select a new folder, enter the name, and then click on the Create button.

  9. The setup now begins. After you see a message that the software has been successfully installed, click on the Quit button.

  10. If your Attachments folder is located in your old Eudora folder, be certain to copy it to either the Documents/Eudora folder/Attachments folder or to some other folder. To identify the new location from Eudora, choose Settings in the Special menu and then click on the Attachments icon in the left column. Click on the Attachments Folder button, locate your Attachments folder, and then click on the Choose button.

  11. At this point, it's recommended you check your configuration values as described in the following section of these instructions.

Note: The Eudora 6.2.4 User's Guide is available separately. It is also recommended that users who have installed Eudora for MacOS X read "OS X Addendum" in the eudora documentation subfolder of the Eudora application folder.

Configure Eudora

If your Attachments folder is located in an old Eudora folder, be certain to copy it to either the Documents/Eudora folder/Attchments folder or some other location. To identify the new location from within Eudora, choose Settings in the Special menu and then click on the "Attachments" icon in the left column. From the dialog box that you see, click on the Attachments button, locate the appropriate folder, and then click on the Use Folder button.

There also are certain values that need to be set in Eudora's configuration file so it will interface properly if you're using OIT connectivity services. To do this, first start Eudora and then choose Settings in the Special menu. Click on the Getting Started icon.

Important - The settings below apply only to the OIT e-mail service. If you're using a different Internet Service Provider such as Road Runner or AOL or a mail server in your college or department, please substitute the correct server names for your incoming and outgoing e-mail. If you're using a non-OSU Internet Service provider, you must configure your mail server information accordingly. You cannot use the OSU SMTP server for outgoing mail. You will need to use your ISP's SMTP server. Click here for more information about the change in open mail relay.

Important: If you use an old Magnus style username for authentication consisting of your first initial and up to seven characters of your last name (e.g., jdoe), you must enter that username instead of your "lastname.#"

Click on the Hosts icon; fill in these values:

Finally, click on Incoming Mail. If the box next to "Leave on server for ____ days" is checked, verify that a number of days is specified. It's important you do this because the OIT mail server handles a large volume of messages every day, and there is a finite amount of storage space. It is not possible for everyone to leave all old messages on the server.

There are a variety of other options you can set based on your personal preferences. For more information, refer to the online Eudora help file (click on the Help menu). When you're finished changing options, click on OK to save your changes.
